CELPIP score chart: Listening, Reading and CLB levels
Use the approximate Listening and Reading charts to understand a raw practice result, then check how CELPIP levels correspond to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Keep a separate target for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
CELPIP Listening score chart: approximate scores out of 38
| CELPIP level | Listening score /38 |
|---|---|
| 10–12 | 35–38 |
| 9 | 33–35 |
| 8 | 30–33 |
| 7 | 27–31 |
| 6 | 22–28 |
| 5 | 17–23 |
| 4 | 11–18 |
| 3 | 7–12 |
| M | 0–7 |
For example, 30 correct answers falls within two published Listening ranges: Levels 7 and 8. Treat that result as a reason to review your evidence and practise again, rather than a promise of Level 8. Use the Listening practice guide to identify the part causing repeated errors.
CELPIP Reading score chart: approximate scores out of 38
| CELPIP level | Reading score /38 |
|---|---|
| 10–12 | 33–38 |
| 9 | 31–33 |
| 8 | 28–31 |
| 7 | 24–28 |
| 6 | 19–25 |
| 5 | 15–20 |
| 4 | 10–16 |
| 3 | 8–11 |
| M | 0–7 |
Listening and Reading use different ranges. Do not apply one skill's chart to the other, and do not scale a short practice set to 38 questions and call it an official level. For a five-question exercise, recording “3/5, with two missed conditions” gives you more useful evidence. Review the four Reading parts and their common traps before another attempt.
CELPIP to CLB conversion
| CELPIP level | CLB level | Official descriptor, simplified |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 12 | Expert proficiency |
| 11 | 11 | Advanced proficiency |
| 10 | 10 | Highly effective proficiency |
| 9 | 9 | Effective proficiency |
| 8 | 8 | Good proficiency |
| 7 | 7 | Adequate proficiency in more demanding contexts |
| 6 | 6 | Developing proficiency |
| 5 | 5 | Acquiring proficiency |
| 4 | 4 | Adequate proficiency for daily life activities |
| 3 | 3 | Some proficiency in limited contexts |
| 2 | CLB 1 or 2 | Limited ability in immediate-needs contexts |
| 1 | No CLB equivalency | Insufficient information to assess |
| 0 | No CLB equivalency | Insufficient information to assess |
For CELPIP Levels 3 through 12, the number maps to the same-number CLB level. CELPIP Level 2 can correspond to CLB 1 or 2. Levels 1 and 0 do not have a CLB equivalency in the current official comparison chart.
What the score-chart terms mean
- Raw score
- The number of scored questions answered correctly. “/38” means out of 38; it is different from the CELPIP level on a score report.
- CELPIP level
- The reported proficiency result for an individual skill. Writing and Speaking use performance criteria, so there is no equivalent “correct answers out of 38” chart for them.
- CLB
- Canadian Language Benchmarks: the reference framework used in the equivalency table. Read your required benchmark separately for each skill.
- Approximate range
- A study reference, not a fixed pass mark. Overlapping ranges account for variation between test forms.
- Practice estimate
- Feedback from a preparation tool. It helps choose the next exercise but does not replace an official result.
Do not average your four skills into one practice target
Your official score report gives a separate result for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A useful study plan therefore keeps four targets visible. If your goal requires a particular minimum in every component, a strong Listening result does not erase a weaker Writing result.
LESS USEFUL
“My average is around 8.”
An average can hide the exact skill that prevents you from meeting your requirement.
MORE USEFUL
L8 · R9 · W7 · S8
A four-skill profile immediately tells you where focused practice should go next.
What a CELPIP 9 practice target should change
A target number becomes useful only when it changes what you practise. CELPIP publishes performance standards for Writing and Speaking, while Listening and Reading depend on selecting correct answers from increasingly demanding language tasks.
- Writing: review Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment rather than chasing difficult words.
- Speaking: review Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment across all eight purposes.
- Listening: diagnose whether misses come from detail tracking, changed decisions, implication, viewpoints or note-taking.
- Reading: diagnose whether misses come from evidence location, conditions, inference, viewpoint or vocabulary in context.
How to use the score chart for preparation
- Write your required target separately for all four skills.
- Take a timed diagnostic or mock and record the current practice level for each skill.
- Find the largest gap between current performance and target.
- Identify the task type or scoring dimension creating most of that gap.
- Spend the next practice block repairing that weakness, then retest it on fresh material.
Important: practice scores are estimates
Only CELPIP can issue an official CELPIP result. AI feedback and practice-band estimates can help you identify patterns and decide what to work on, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed official score. Use repeated timed attempts and several sources of evidence when deciding whether you are ready.
Source check, 27 October 2026: the official CELPIP Results page publishes the raw-score ranges and CLB mapping. The official CELPIP Score Comparison Chart provides Writing and Speaking performance examples. Always confirm the requirement for your own immigration, professional or educational pathway with the relevant authority; CELPIP Studio does not determine eligibility.
