TRY A WORKED EXAMPLE
Writing practice: turn a vague request into a useful one
Original email scenario: You ordered a desk for working from home, but one leg arrived damaged. Explain the damage, describe its effect on your work and request a solution from the store.
A weak request is: “Please fix this problem as soon as possible.” It states dissatisfaction but leaves the reader to guess what would help.
“One of the desk legs has a crack near the mounting hole, so I cannot assemble it safely. I start working from home next Monday and currently have no suitable workspace. Could you send a replacement leg by Friday, or arrange an exchange if a replacement cannot arrive in time?”
Why this paragraph works
It identifies the exact defect, explains a practical consequence and requests a specific remedy with an alternative. The deadline has a reason, and the tone remains polite. This is an excerpt, not a complete email or an official scored response.
Now write your own email with an opening, coverage of all three instructions and a closing. Review whether the reader can understand the problem and take the action you need. Use the complete Writing sample answers to study how a full response develops its ideas.
Original CELPIP Studio teaching material. Independent preparation; not an official test question.
What you can practise
The published Writing section contains 2 task types. Studio keeps those task purposes visible so you can train the skill behind the question instead of memorizing a template.
TASK 1
Writing an Email
Write a purposeful email with appropriate tone.
Read the in-depth Task 1 email guide →Read the concise task guide →TASK 2
Responding to Survey Questions
Choose a position and support it in a survey response.
Read the in-depth Task 2 survey guide →Read the concise task guide →Practise, review the evidence, then add time pressure
Feedback is organized around Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. Use the evidence in your response to choose one high-impact change for the next attempt.
Plan and revise in learning mode, then use the timed section when you want to practise covering every prompt requirement under exam-style timing.
How to use this page as a study sequence
- Read the guide for one task type and identify the decision the task is testing.
- Complete a focused original practice activity and review the evidence behind your result.
- Repeat the same skill with a new topic so the improvement transfers beyond one prompt.
- Use a timed Skill Mock to check whether the habit still holds under pressure.
Current Studio simulations use approximately 53 minutes for the Writing section. Official timing ranges and rules can change, so check the official CELPIP test format before test day.
